Lucas Penner This record has given me a sense of home when I was lost. It's a wise and caring friend. It's speaking to you, but it's also, somehow, listening. There's a misleading feeling of simplicity to the complex arrangements of these tunes, but I think that's because Tavis has just made the whole thing sound so damn good. I love this album and come back to it often. Favorite track: Footsteps.

Sleep Deep 04:33
I caught you smiling to yourself into the mirror It was reflecting your glow into my heart And when I run and hide, from some fear or other Or when my tongue is tied, I remember you said: "Sleep deep and rise slow. We already know everything we need to know. Get wise with the passing time. Just lay down with me now and we'll be fine." I was just floating by myself along a river And when I stopped awhile to rest on the shore That's when you caught my eye from deep in the water And I didn't wonder why, I jumped right in and heard: "Sleep deep and rise slow. We already know everything we need to know. Get wise with the passing time. Just lay down with me now and we'll be fine." What could I do? I'm immune to advice. Advice doesn't work on me. But you speak the truth and I had no choice, You see what I can't see, and you said: "Sleep deep and rise slow. We already know everything we need to know. Get wise with the passing time. Just lay down with me now and we'll be fine."

Icebergs 03:51
We barely notice thirty years gone under: float out like icebergs into the sea Nine years of rainfall, a day and a half of crying to find the source of everything but their own doubt Three decades of I don't, don't know what emotion. Maybe five or six sunrises in that time Don't try to use your mind, it will only use you like clouds casting shadows on lower clouds When are we going to see all this experience come out the other side of your head? I believe we are here to witness and repeat back what life has said In terms of distance, your lightning and my thunder are seen and heard at the same time We barely notice our thirst and then our hunger until my darling we're out of time We barely notice thirty years gone under. With your head below the surface can you still breathe? Nine years of rainfall, can you blame the earth for trying to satisfy a people with such a yearning?

Us & Ours 03:23
I'm not real even though it still hurts when I bite you "Ow my love!" is what you say but I know that you like it And I'm not blind but I'm blind when I blindfold and fight you "Ow my love!" is what we say when we knock each other down And the trees gather 'round. Their desire's half as strong as ours. We hold on, we hold on, we hold on and their leaves turn brown. I was born and I knew that someday I would find you "Where's my love?" I would say until I finally did And I'll rid myself of everything but you once I make up my mind to But my mind of myself is what I will eventually rid And the animals gather 'round. They don't ask for half of what we usually demand. We keep on, we keep on, we keep on as if it was our land. We're not real but I sleep and my love sleeps beside me We swept the floor clean for to say "I'm consistently yours" And I'll ask you to renew your love each coming day Let the past be nothing but the past so help us god let the past go away And our thoughts gather 'round. Let us suffer half of what we actually deserve. We fall down, we fall down, we fall down into these arms we've found.

Brooklyn 03:27
Melody's gone and harmony too. All that remains is the sound of the wind in the falling of the darkness. You'll go to Brooklyn and I'll go to Wales and when we get back we'll write all our tales in a blog. The whole damn town is dressed in a fog, the internet's down and you're rolling around in my head. I want to live with you 'till our senior days. I've seen that our days get better with time And I'll see you soon in the summer days. The sun is your face as it's pressed into mine. I wake to a dawn that's covered in dew. All I can hear is the sound of your voice as dreams bleed to waking. You sleep in Brooklyn as I wake in Wales and as the fog lifts I feel all of my failures anew Where to go and what to do? Your Hamilton train left an hour ago and I'll wait for you here in the snow. When I feel like bad things will happen before they do; when it's been so long since I've heard anything true, I look at you and I'm standing on the sunny side of a hill in my home town.

Listen to the night take deep breaths Listen to the world waking with a start You can hear the singer's heartbeat in one note when her heart is in her throat When I was a boy I came to believe I was alone and I would go out into a night with two moons, one of which had been swallowed by the lake. Could it be the real one or a fake, and is it my call to make? Those who go alone, they go to be seen by the moon's knowing glow and to listen to the depths below in this mortal boat we row Though you're growing old you have still kept your smile and your shining eyes watch you as your lives pass you by Listen to the hours whistle as they fly Don't ask where they go and don't ask why, for you'll find out in good time. Those who go alone, they go to be seen by the moon's knowing glow and to listen to the depths below in this mortal boat we row Listen to the day take deep breaths as if it was about to fall apart Is this the reason that you make your art, to give us a new start?

Sleep it Off 04:21
Some of us never do well with the daily transition Swimming from the pools of moonlight to the shores of the land of the sun Causing my eyelids to swell as my dreams commit treason Some of us never do well with such abrupt change of season I like you, Time. I think I'll keep you around. As long as I'm captive in this mind, time is on my side. Promise me never to sell any of your grey matter It's never easy to tell those who tell the truth from those who flatter Keep all your dreams to yourself, for they will lead you to safety In the ocean of mental health they can be your diving bell I like you, Time. I think I'll keep you around. As long as I'm captive in this mind, time is on my side. Picture yourself in a swell caused by the moon's persuasion To rise again after you fell, what was down would now be up Some of us never do well with the daily transition Just sleep it off, sleep it off, sleep it off in the bliss of intermission

Footsteps 03:42
With new eyes I saw you step into my life And if I dared to ask you: "who am I?" You're say: "Baby, if I told ya, and I never tell a lie You would never be able to sleep again." 'Cause you are my home, it doesn't matter where I go You show me myself when I feel like I don't have the right to know From my struggle I don't have a thing to show, and you forgive me. 'Neath new skies I've wandered following the signs But my time I've squandered. Didn't know which path was mine In the end I've found out so much more about you than I did myself 'Cause you are my home, it doesn't matter where I go You show me myself when I feel like I don't have the right to know From my struggle I don't have a thing to show, and you forgive me. I heard your footsteps echo as I followed you out of my life I just want you to know that I gave it a good try And if I didn't find all that I was looking for Well I got to grow old with you instead 'Cause you are my home, it doesn't matter where I go You show me myself when I feel like I don't have the right to know From my struggle I don't have a thing to show, and you forgive me.

Potential 03:32
Turn on a light in this empty hall filled with resounding potential Without a single bad review. How can they review what I had meant to leave up to you...are conducted by nobody as the old man in the third row coughs noisily knowing he won't annoy the fans. This man could never hope to interrupt what we had planned. Carry my rhythm after I'm gone. Please let it help you sleep easier. Know that I also dream of you. Not many regrets but this seems to be one of the few that I'll never pass on to you though you paid for your tickets and CDs hoping to hear what might come true. But you'll only hear what you already know to be true.

Drops of gold were just ideas 'till you put them, at dawn, in your mouth and you spoke of a love few ever knew. At a time when my voice was afraid to place words in this silence we'd laid As we withdrew The dropping cold gave a silver hue to the words escaping from our song As it broke uncontrolled What have we sung? Is it to all, just ourselves or no-one? The wings of coal had a birds-eye view of the thoughts escaping from your mind. They got away just in time. What have we sung? Is it to all, just ourselves or no-one? The leaves on the trees, as mute as me even on a good day. But when there's a breeze they hiss and whistle clearer than I'll ever play. The shorelines fold, after fold, after fold, after fold, the freezing water on itself 'till it foams at the mouth. What have we sung? Is it to all, just ourselves or no-one?
